Country is Rock n' Roll

As most of you do not know, I am currently interning this summer at The Ohio State Fair for Ohio Farm Bureau with many of my friends. The fair is a summer classic for all to enjoy. When most people think of the fair they think rednecks, smelly cows, pigs, sheep and such and junk food...but when I think of the fair I think about rock n' roll. You see, last evening around 4:00 I decided to buy a ticket to see country music artists Miranda Lambert (gorgeous by the way) and Dierks Bentley. For any country haters these two are tearing up the country music charts with new singles every week. I am a big fan of country and especially Dierks so I wasn't particularly interested in Lambert until I saw her show. She is a total knockout in tight blue jeans and tank top. Anyways, for a girl she can rock and everyone from kids to teenaged girls to adults love her.

Dierks is considered to be a mellow, sappy country singer but he can also put on a heck of a show that can remind you of a Mick Jagger performance (from what I've seen or heard of) at times. Dierks played everything from slow country, bluegrass to pure rock and roll. The encore featured himself and Lambert performing Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. The title link provides a clip and a different version of the encore. I just thought I would share my experience and encourage the readers to experience a country concert sometime because if you hate country you're just not listening closely enough.

P.S. - The "Hick State Fair" is also showcasing rock legends such as Peter Frampton, Ted Nugent as well as Charlie Daniels Band, Blake Shelton and Melissa Etheridge.

  1. Can't argue with the title, and anyone who covers Mr. Cash is OK by me. We here at RHT cover the musical spectrum, my friends.

  2. A Kip sighting!! Welcome back. Last night the fam & I went to see my father-in-law's band play in WCH (very good btw - Rockin' Country is their name; Colin Kelley, Dick Doyle, Jeff Hudson, Jimmy Pettit). They play a mix of classic rock & country - from The Beatles to George Strait. Anyhow, what was a nice, wholesome event went totally redneck in two seconds with the opening lines of David Allan Coe's "You never Even Called Me By My Name." My wife & I throroughly embarrassed our sons by singing along with the rest of the crowd. You can take the boy outta the country, but not the country outta the boy. Good times.

  3. Nice post. Good to have a new contributor - I get sick of reading these guy's lame posts. ha.

However, I think the thing you dig about the "new" country is what makes me wanna hurl. I just want my country to sound like country (ala The Possum, The Hag, Alan Jackson, etc.) I do like some of the rockin' stuff but for me, if its gonna rock - let's not hold back. I almost feel like they are saying, well I couldn't make it in real rock and roll so let's half-ass it and call it country. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Can't argue with the Man in Black cover though.

  4. Saw Dierks at the Preble County Fair on Friday night. Saw Kenny Chesney the night before. Kenny sucked, Dierks was awesome. I thought he was twice the entertainer that Kenny was.

I also agree with supervesey, I like country music that sounds like country music. 95% of the crap on country radio today is pop music garbage. You really have to dig to find country music that is worthy of guys like Johnny Cash, Waylon, Merle Haggard, etc.

  5. Hey, rock and country have been a mixed bag from the beginning. Johnny Cash and Waylon toured with Elvis, ya know. I don't get the animosity when genres become diluted, it's just a fact of life. If you like the "pure" country, that's cool. But that doesn't make the other stuff bad. It's all a part of life's rich pagaent my friends.

  6. I know of which they speak - the American Idol infection has reached country radio as well. Carrie Underwood wins it one year, now there's a dozen little blonde wannabees (sorry Miranda Lambert) trying to be just like her.

One more gripe: when will Brad Paisley realize his little ditties aren't funny anymore? Who the hell does he think he is, Tom T. frickin' Hall?

  7. There was only one Tom T. Hall my friends.

R.I.P. Delaney

I lost my little Scottish Terrier on Monday, September 8th to cancer. Her name was Delaney and she was a warrior. She was a rescue, and in her lifetime she'd been to hell and back. At the risk of sounding like a total wimp, it hurts like a son-of-a-bitch. If you're a dog lover like myself and want to see what she was all about, you can check out this link:

Man, I miss that little dog.

By the way, this link stays up as long as RHT is in existence.
